WOMEN'S MINISTRIES

In a brief press release from the General Board of Global Ministries, the following description was given: "United Methodist Women is a one-million member organization, whose purpose is to foster spiritual growth, develop leaders, and advocate for social justice. Members raise more than $20 million dollars a year for programs and projects related to women, children, and youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world."

This is certainly a true and concise explanation of UMW, but I began to wonder what the people in the Reservoir Church think it means to be a member of United Methodist Women. Our PURPOSE says that we shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. The bottom line is that we are a MISSION organization following the mandate that Jesus gave us to minister to and to serve those who have a need, particularly the needs of women, children and youth. Sometimes it may mean writing to our senators, congressmen and women and even the president when we determine that certain legislation will help the lives of thousands of children. TANF (Temporary Aid For Needy Families) and CEDAW (Convention On The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women) are two current issues that are currently being supported. Sometimes it may mean purchasing a piece of equipment for Camp Epworth. Time and money are sometimes expended to make up layettes, school kits and health kits for the children of Haiti or Mozambique. Scholarships for campers attending the church camps of the New York Conference are sometimes given. Giving a hand at a Domestic Shelter Party is always a blessing for our unit. We receive more love than we can give. Our individual member-pledges to mission enable us to give about $600 a year for projects here and abroad.
